So Wyatt's been pretty adventurous when it comes to trying to new foods and eating solids. So far, he's had bananas, avocados, sweet potatoes, and rice cereal. Amy practices with him all day while I'm at work, and, when I get to sit down with him at the dinner table I'm amazed by the new skills! Granted, most of the food ends up either on his lap, his hands, or, his chin, but, when he gets his little mitts on some good sized chunks, into the mouth they go! He really gets excited when we simply strap him into the chair, and, his little feet and legs go absolutely CRAZY with excitement. He smiles, giggles, and, puts his hands up like "let's go!". He started drinking water out of a sippy cup as well, which is pretty neat. He also knows which end of the spoon goes in his mouth when he grabs it himself. He has his mother's brains that's for sure.

Time to play catch-up
When you add up all of the things that have happened to our family over the last 6 months, it's quite a mouthful. Here's kinda how things have broken down for us:
1. Wyatt's Born in June
2. My beloved Grandmother Anne Cohen passes away at the age of 97.5 in August
3. I (G) get a new job offer in October
4. We decided to move to North Carolina to accept the job offer in November
5. We purchase/are under contract on a house in December
6. My beloved Grandfather Moses Harry Cohen passes away at the age of 99.5 in December
That's quite a lot to pack into six months, no? And on the "life event stressor scale", it's the top 5 things that will stress you out...all of 'em. However, our little family has made it through all of it thanks to our friends and family. We love and are thankful to you all.
So, let's catch up to where we are today, shall we? Wyatt had his six month check up at the doc on Tuesday. He's just about doubled his weight since birth, and, is a fraction of a hair under 17lbs. His napping skills have improved dramatically, although, we're still exposed to the occasional 20 ("kitty") or 40 ("cat") minute nap. We're slowly working on getting him to continue to sleep longer stretches at night, and we seem to be accomplishing that, albeit in steps. Baby steps. At the same time, we're working on getting him to put himself back to sleep once he wakes up. He's getting very good at it, and, the intervals of awake time are getting significantly shorter (except for that 1-2 hours at 4:30/5am...that's a tricky one).
He's taller now too, so, he's growing out of his clothes quicker. Amy bought this awesome shirt one day, while out with Abel & his mom Sarah. It's pretty 70s looking, and the first person that came to mind was the guy that played "Larry" on Three's company...
Maybe it's the collar?
Also, we've started solids. It's so funny to see how excited he gets when we eat, and, he gets even crazier when we put him in his high chair to eat. Here we are after our first sweet potato experience. He ate this stuff up more so than any other food he's tried so far. He also has worn it a lot more...

Regardless, our little family is thriving on the changes and we're very excited about the things to come, while, at the same time, we're also keeping fond memories of those that may have passed away this year close in our hearts.

An apple a day...
Today was our 6 month check up. All is well in cute baby land. To help mitigate any discomfort from the shots, we're gonna suck on some apple then snuggle like crazy!
Back in business!
Looks like we're finally all set up for resuming Wyatt's blog. Keep an eye out for a nice catch up post tomorrow along with pictures of our new house! Yep! The Wellerthals are fixin to set up camp for a little while...

Rolling with it
Well, this morning saw our Nana Weller off to the airport headed back to Greensboro after a week long visit. We've been packing up the house like mad the last week or so, and, she's been extremely helpful in hanging with the little man while we deliberate whether or not to bring certain items with us to NC during the bubblewrapping and stowing of our property.
Over the course of the last week or so, Amy had the opportunity to do a little bit of work in the office in the evenings. That being said, I've had the chance to hang with Wyatt all alone for up to 6 hours (prior to Elaine showing up), and, the same but with Nana in the wings downstairs if I needed her. During this time, I've absolutely loved the bonding that Wyatt and I have been experiencing. Obviously with Amy out of the house completely, it was my responsibility to feed him bottles and give him 100% attention and love. While I attempt to do that anyway, when your partner is around it's easy to pass him around off and on so we both get a chance to do stuff. But, when it's just you...it's JUST YOU and you're on 100%. One thing I can say to all the full-time moms is that, while I've always admired and appreciated the dedication you have to raising your children as your job, now that I've stood in your shoes, I completely understand how flipping hard it is to do. For that, I am thankful to ALL of you! This is some seriously hard work. The naps. The bottles. The "keeping it interesting" play circuits. All of it is a labor of love, and, I thoroughly enjoyed it myself.
Wyatt usually has takes his cranky pills around 6:30 or so, and, often once again before it's time to go to sleep. The greatest thing I've been able to bond with him over is simply being there with him while he cries. When Amy's home, we'll usually give each other about 20-30 minutes, then, relieve the parent on duty. In these instances, it's just me, and, I really enjoy it. I hold him in my arms and talk to him the entire time...comforting him and letting him know that I am there and that it's ok if he wants to let it out. I'll just hang out and listen until he's done. Eventually, he finishes up and passes out in my arms, only to finish off the existing 1 or 2 oz of milk, or, just goes right down into the co-sleeper.
He's been such a trooper through this crazy time of transition and change, and has just rolled with it. Bottle feedings were NEVER an issue, and, last night Elaine even was able to give him one. It was pretty exciting to see because it kind of gave us even more of a picture of just how far he's come. It's quite a sight!

Boys on Film
Wyatt has a very special buddy Abel that he met before he was even born. Wyatt looks up to Abel as he is much older (one week) and more experienced. I'm not sure if their playdates are for the moms or for the boys. Actually I am sure. Sarah's really cool.
Anywho, I could watch this video all day. Be on the lookout for hand holding, ear pulling and a deep discussion of particle physics.

Nana and Papa-thon!
Wyatt has been on a two week Nana/Poppa bender! Last week we spent time on the farm with Nana and Papa W and a few barnyard critters. Wyatt found the horse about as interesting as the fence. I think the "horse recognition stage" is a few months off...
And this week he's been treated to cuddles and 'specials' (presents) from the Rosenthal clan. He returned the favor by giving Papa R a present of his own...

Dress rehearsal
There is news around this house that Amy *might* go back to work and do a bit of part time here & there. In prep for this time away, I've requested that from now on, I put him to sleep with a bottle so we're ready for her to be gone, should she work in the late afternoon/evening.
After about 15 minutes of Wyatt crying out all that he took in today (this kid is wide-eyed and absorbing the world at every moment), 2 big ole poops, and, an impressive vomit/spitup, Wyatt settled down and took (more like POUNDED) a 4oz bottle. He fell asleep on me after eating; something usually only his mommy experiences. With his belly full and mind finally at ease, his breaths are deep and his nose whistles this distinct pitch that I hear in the middle of the night
Oh...and he pooped AGAIN too.

Greetings from NC
Well, we made it without issue to North Carolina. After a night of hard partying at Jordan & Shannon's lovely wedding, Wyatt slept a little bit, but, we woke him up to head to the airport at about 3:30am. He slept from I-70 all the way to Houston! Didn't move an inch on the plane during take off or landing, and, nursed in the ergo once to boot. He finally woke up as we were taxiing out of the gate heading to Greensboro, and, then, 40 minutes later, dad was able to get him to sleep for the remainder of the 2 hour flight. What a great little traveller! (Phew...). Up next...the return trip :-o

Lovey from Luca
the little man doesn't quite have favorite toys yet, but he's starting to get very playful. he's a maniac on the activity mat, flapping his wings and swatting at brightly colored baby do-hickies. he also likes to put things in his mouth, mainly on his quest to get that darn thumb. or the thumb and forefinger. or the entire fist. and now he has one special thing that he really loves, a small soft blanket with pretty little tags all over it that cousin Luca gave him. the tags are perfect for grabbing with little fingers and the blanket is apparently made with something extra delicious, because he just loves sucking on it.

More from the Peanut Gallery
the little man is still talking up a storm, its too bad this movie doesn't have subtitles. and i love how expressive his eyebrows are, even though he only has a few actual hairs up there.
and no comments from you people about why i'm still in pj's (and why they're on inside out).

Thankful, again...
On this Jewish New Years Day, I am thankful for:
1. A breastfeeding wife that is still smiling through tired eyes at our beautiful baby boy at 2:30am
2. A very happy baby boy that teaches me just how much I can love every single day
3. A loving, caring, and generous family, extended family, and, a set of friends whose hearts are as big as they are deep.

goo goo gaa gaa
so the little sweet biscuit has found his voice! for the past month or so Wyatt has been really vocal. he's been cracking us up as he gets all worked up, making bigger and bigger noises for us. his coos seem to mimic real speech as we volly back and forth in little babbling conversations. i kind of think he might actually bust out some SAT prep words in the coming weeks. and i could have sworn he said "milk" the other day. but then it dawned on me that i must be confusing my dream life with my waking life again. the line is really fuzzy these days.

Weekend Wrap
This extended Labor Day weekend was both a time for partying and a time for getting serious. I'm going to get the business out of the way first, then, we'll get to the partying...
We've been reading a few books, as well as Googleing our fingers off, to figure out some new strategies to get Wyatt to sleep a little bit longer during the night, extended his times in between feedings, and, get him more sleep during the day for his naps with the only condition being that they happen in his co-sleeper. According to one text, we could get him to sleep through a feeding after 3 straight nights of good solid work in establishing the pattern. The plan was this...feed him in the normal 8-9 ish window, then put him down for bed. Assuming he slept 3-4 hrs with a good tank up, we could feed him again at midnight, then, plan on pushing him through the 2am (a.k.a. the "dream time feed") feeding by comforting him back to sleep should he need to be comforted.
Saturday, Amy sorta handled it herself, and he made it about 3 hrs or so, which was a good step. The nice thing is that he didn't have a hunger meltdown at 3am, but rather, just kinda squeaked an eventually went back to sleep. Sunday night, it became a tag-team event. At midnight, Amy gently placed Wyatt back in the co-sleeper after his feeding, and we switched places in bed...I was now sleeping next to him while she slept in my spot. It was my duty to try to comfort him if he woke up in a tizzy all hungry at the 2/2:30 time, and get him back to sleep to wake up again at 4. Apparently most of these little folks have troubles transitioning between their sleep cycles, so, if you can at least help kick-start the next one, they can learn to comfort themselves and just keep going eventually. So, like clockwork, he started fidgeting around 2:05, and, as I tried to stay out of his line of sight so he could put himself back to sleep. He let out a small squeak, so, I quickly picked him up, walked him around for about 5-6 minutes. He immediately fell asleep when I put him against my body, but, wanted to make sure he'd marinate a little bit more and really get the cycle started before I put him down.He didn't wake up again until about 4:15, so, mission accomplished there. Phew. Added bonus, when he woke up, he wasn't crying or anything, he just smiled up at Amy and giggled (I heard it), ate, and went back to sleep.Last night (Monday) we did it again, and this time, we skipped the midnight feeding instead of the 2am...the goal is to get 4 hr stretches at night, it doesn't really matter where they fit in, with the ultimate plan being that he progressively sleeps though the night with minimal feedings, but most importantly, can soothe himself back to sleep (this is the key!). So, Amy & I switched places at 10:30 (he ate at 10), and, it was deja vu. One huge positive thing was that it literally took me 3 minutes to get him back to sleep before placing him back in the co-sleeper. He then slept again until about 1:45, but started clicking/flailing either due to gas, or, he was really that hungry. Again, no crying, just a squeak knowing it was time. Amy fed him, and, we put him back down after a holding him upright, and, he slept for a little while longer. He has been waking up pretty regularly between 3:30-5 with some gas, and, he's been trying to find his thumb, so, he's working himself up into a mini-freakout with all this stuff going on. It's really hard to get him back to sleep after this, but, he's learning...which is gggrreat!!!!
Onto the fun!
Ok! So, Saturday, we decided to make it a day out on the town and enjoy the gorgeous weather. Before we left the house though, we made sure to grab the awesome outdoor blanket our friends Jordan & Shannon gave us as a baby gift, for the plan was a picnic! We ran a few errands for mom at first, then, took Wyatt to Rock the Cradle for some new clothes (we had a Groupon that was expiring). We ordered lunch from Sputnik, where I had a TLT (Tempeh, Lettuce, Tomato) sandwich which absolutely blew my mind, while Amy got a Vietnamese Banh Mi Sandwich with Tofu. We set up shop at this cute little park on 3rd & Ogden, just enough off the main drag of Speer and enjoyed our lunches as Wyatt slowly woke up. We sat & played in the shade for a few hours, then, went on and finished our errands. It was an awesome day, with some really awesome weather!!! Sunday, I woke up early, and, got out for a quick ride while Amy & Wyatt bit off a little bit more sleep time together. When I returned, I was able to releive her so she could go for a run before it got too hot, and, then it was off to more errands. This time, we headed to the grocery store so we could get back on our regular regiment of cooking our meals for the week (lunches & dinners). Wyatt ate a good sized lunch, and, pretty much passed out from about 1 or so to 3:30. During that time, I was able to cook up a few delicious dishes for the week, and, Amy was able to just chill out and read! That night, we went over to Sarah, Mike, & Abel's house for a super yummy dinner as prepped by Sarah. The boys kicked, cooed, and made all sorts of funny faces together while laying on one of Abel's little play mats. The parents of course were witnesses of the "cute-off", but, at times were busy grilling each other about their parenting experiences/successes/etc. It's funny what we talk about. Anyway, we left with our bellies full, faces smiling, and one tired little baby boy. Monday, we had the pleasure of having Mike & Kelly come over for brunch, and then join us for a neighborhood family walk. We always enjoy their company, and, this time was no less special. Heck, they even provided the food!! Such awesome folks. We love 'em. Later that day, we rolled over to City Park to see our friends both with & without rug rats. It's amazing how fast the older kids are growing and developing in just a year, and, it creates this amazing sense of excitement for us! We got to see the Fitzsniders (Mike, Sarah & Abel) again, which is always a treat no matter what, but, also hung with our old posse, which, in turn, actually knew Mike & Sarah through some funny connections! What a small world it was. Eventually, we headed home around 6 or so, ate some dinner, and, bathed the little man. He got dressed in his pjs, and, we all hit the hay at 8:15pm! We were all pretty worked, but, it was mostly from having such awesome friends, and, awesome times!!!
Next up for us is more nighttime & nap work, with some heavy emphasis on bottle feeding. Mike & Sarah gave us a new bottle to try, as we've been 0 for 4 since last Tuesday in taking the bottle. Maybe this week things'll be on the up n up for that!! Until next time, here are a few pics...

Finally...a word from the peanut gallery.
In the stretch of the last 2 weeks so much has happened that pictures of Wyatt simply aren't enough of a communication milieu. I do realize they are necessary though, so, have no fear, they will continue regularly. It is time for some text from mom/dad to give you more detail as to what is goin' on behind those cheeks!
Well, Saturday marked the end of a wonderful visit from our beloved Nana Weller (Elaine). Elaine came in on Saturday the 21st, and, stayed for a full week graciously helping out a very tired set of parents. The week was full of hugs, cuddles, home made dinners & treats, and just ole plain fun! Her soft touch really helped Wyatt calm down when he was feeling bad from his vaccines, or, was just having some grizzlies. After we dropped her off at the airport, it was expected that a tear or two would appear in my eye. Like clockwork it showed up, but, the emotions weren't so strong since we'll be seeing them in a short 5 weeks!
That night, I was feeling pretty confident about things, and, encouraged Amy to get out and meet a friend for a drink. I knew she'd be just around the corner, so, if anything went wrong, or, we needed some food (given our bottle track record), she could make it home in lickety split. I put Wyatt down around 7pm because he looked legitimately sleepy, and, Amy left shortly thereafter. Around 7:15 or so, I heard him squeak on the baby monitor, so, I went upstairs to check on him. He was kicking his legs like crazy, and, really upset. I first tried to soothe him in the co-sleeper by petting his head, belly, and, telling him that he can go to sleep because he's tired. That didn't work, so, I gently took him out of the swaddle and walked around with him. His screams & cries got progressively worse and sounded more and more painful, so I held him a little tighter and talked to him the whole time. We sat back down on the bed in the same way he and mom sit after a feeding, to give him a sense of familiarity (or something), and he WAILED like I've never heard. He never once asked for food, so I knew he might be in pain. It was so sad. However, I gently patted him, held him securely, and, just told him that I was here with him and that I will be with him for as long as necessary. He could cry for hours and I'd still be there with him...all was going to be ok. For the next hour, we just sat together in the dark...together. He cried and I talked to him. He eventually settled down and just passed out, but, I held him for a little longer just to let him know I was still there with him. I put him in the co-sleeper, swaddled him up, and, quietly walked downstairs to relax on the couch. While that was probably one of the hardest hours of our (he & I) lives, it was SUCH a boost for both of us...Wyatt learned his dad was going to be there for him whenever he needed, and, I learned that I COULD do it. Up until then, Amy had been the master of calming him down in those periods of fussiness, only because he was either hungry, or, had grizzlies and needed to eat. When she walked in and saw me sitting on the couch, she had such a smile on her face because she thought I'd been sitting there all night, when, in reality I'd come downstairs about 5 minutes before she walked in. I broke the news to her, and we talked about how positive of an experience it was for both Wyatt & I. I felt so good about everything, and, Elaine's comments around how "we were doing such an amazing job, and, we're such attentive loving parents" rang like echoes. It's such a confidence boost to be able to get through something like that, only because it's stressful for both parties. He can sense if I'm stressed out, or, feeling helpless, and it just prolongs his fussiness/discomfort. Phew!
In other news, Wyatt finally was able to take a bottle for a bit on Sunday. Since our check-up, we've been shooting to do a bottle a day...even if it's an attempt, and we fall back on to eating the boobie. Little man has got to learn how to suck the bottle for when mom goes back to work. Anyway, we struggled for the first 20 or so minutes, and eventually he lost his mind as started crying. I think a lot of it was in the way I might have been holding him...I'm not sure. So, after I calmed him down, I put him in his blue bouncy chair that he's familiar with, and, fed him that way. After chewing on the nipple for a few minutes, he finally started sucking, and just about pulled the entire bottle into his mouth out of my hand. While he probably wore 1/2oz of the 2 oz he drank, he ate from the bottle nonetheless. The biggest thing was to just keep trying. No matter how fussy he got, I'd calm him down, and try again. Eventually he took it. I'm very excited to try again when I get him. It's not so daunting anymore either...it's kind of like a chess game..."Your move little man!". Regardless, I chalked it up as a "W". Funny side note...while he was breaking down, I took him into the bathroom to get a change of scenery thinking maybe that'd help, and, he discovered the mirror. As we bounced, his gaze was absolutely fixed on himself, and, I started to ask him (in a song form of course) "Who's that baby? He's so cute!Who's that baby? He's so cute!". He actually smiled and giggled at the whole thing, and, it was quite hilarious to watch him.
In an unprecedented fashion, Wyatt has now learned (or just is able to) sleep longer than 2hrs at night! He's been eating both breasts before bed, and, promptly passing out after, so, we think his tummy has finally gotten bigger and he can be satisfied a little easier. Thursday night, he slept from 11pm-3am, Friday night 10pm-2am, Saturday night 8pm-midnight, and last night, 9pm-midnight (yeah it's not 4, but, anything over 2 is great!). Amy & I kept waking up anyway every now and then just because, and, Amy mentioned she'd wake up and think "Wait, did i feed him and not hold him upright for 30 minutes!?" or "Wait, did I just feed him". However, gazing down into the co-sleeper she could see him still swaddled letting her know she did what she needed. The hardest part of sleep right now, is the actual "execution" piece...GETTING him to sleep. I was reading a book last night, and, they wrote that as the child gets to bond with the parents more and more, they simply don't want to leave them and go to sleep. They want to stay awake and hang out (hey, we're cool parents!), trying to avoid the early stages of separation anxiety. On top of that, when we put him down for naps, they don't last very long...maybe 30 minutes tops (an hour if we're lucky). He usually wakes up screaming, and we can't tell if it's something in his belly (like gas), or, he is just awake and nobody is around for the next 5-10 seconds (or however long it takes for us to sprint upstairs to grab him!).
Finally, I'd be re-missed if I didn't talk about Sunday's events. Since I got to go for a longer ride on Saturday, it was my turn to rest, and, get Amy out the door on her bike for a little bit of "mom & baby" time with her other baby...her Moots. So, she headed out the door around 10am or so, after a good tank up of Wyatt. He and I just kind of hung out. I read to him, we looked at pictures together, and, I did a bit of laundry while he was chilling out in his bouncy chair. We planned on meeting Amy around 12:15, so, I had the idea of loading up the car around 11, heading out to Golden, and, walking around downtown with him in the ergo. When I pulled into the public parking lot, he was out cold, and, I didn't want to wake him. I promptly pulled out of the lot, and, started to drive up Lookout Mountain, figuring we'd run into mom either still going up, or, starting to come down. We caught her about 2 miles from the summit, and, she had a such a big smile on her surprised face when she saw us drive by. Of course, she pulled off to say hello, but, Wyatt and I promptly told her to get back on the bike and summit. She did, and we drove down the hill and waited for her at the pillars, where she arrived about 10 minutes or so after we did. I'd pulled him out of his seat and was standing in the shade with him when she arrived, and, she was ready to hold him before she even got off of her bike :-). Amy changed in the parking lot, and, we walked over to a small park where she nursed him in the shade. He fell asleep shortly thereafter, and, we enjoyed some lunch at the Empenada Express again. We all headed home together, and had such a great day that we eventually were all in bed at 9pm, after watching a bit of the Emmys.

V-Day
Well, yesterday was the day we'd been worried about for some time now...vaccination day. Our biggest concerns were obviously side effects and the types of issues the shots could potentially create, based on the info we've read.
The appointment started out as Wyatt's 2 month checkup, and, everything was great! He was in the 75th percentile for weight, which was a major concern for me since his reflux would kinda cause him to spit up most of what he'd just eaten. Luckily, the medicine has been working, and, any spit up we have is minimal with fewer and fewer episodes as well. Phew! His height was only in the 25th percentile, but we sense a growth spurt coming on. With both parents between 5'8 & 5'11, we know this little pinto bean is gonna sprout straight up!
After the doctor finished answering our questions, he walked out, and, we knew what was next. "The nurse will be in shortly" he said as he walked out, and, we definitely could feel the anxiety in the room building. The nurse walked in with a plastic tray that had 3 shot vaccines, and, 1 in oral suspension. She administered the oral first, and while Wyatt just kinda lay there, he had that perplexed look on his face like "Um...ok...this isn't that nasty medicine I get 2-3x a day, and, it definitely AIN'T the boob...sup with that?!". The nurse then asked us to "rotate" him 90 degrees so his body was facing her, and then she quickly put these GIGANTIC (I mean really...he's an infant...does it need to be so big?!?!) needles into his legs, 3 times. I'm not sure what order they went in, but, the first one really pissed him off, and, before he knew it, all 3 were done. I, of course, looked, and, watched his face immediately turn red and his legs start to kick like crazy. Ugh...I also started to cry a little because it was so heartbreaking to hear. These cries were distinctly different than his hunger or reflux cries, and, I'm pretty sure that's what did it to me.
As soon as the nurse pulled the third needle out of his leg, Amy immediately grabbed him off the table and was consoling him with as much love as humanly possible. You could feel how upset he was, but, also just how much Amy was helping him to calm down...it was pretty cool. He calmed down literally 2 minutes later, and, Amy gave him a bit to eat which really hit the nail on the head for him. He promptly fell asleep on her lap, and, we gently loaded him into the car seat to take home. I sat and ate lunch with him while Amy & Elaine went to the store really quickly, and, he slowly woke up from his slumber. I was very quick to take him out of the car seat and give him a bunch of hugs & kisses in case he had a memory of what had happened shortly before, but, luckily he just was looking around as normal...taking everything in. Then...he went ahead and did this:
Yep....he smiled at me. So, of course I smiled back, welled up with tears, said the loudest "awwwwww" I'd ever spoken, and, promptly kissed him a million times on his little forehead. Throughout the rest of the day, he pretty much slept it off like a huge hangover. However, later in the day & evening, he definitely wasn't feeling well. We checked his temp, and, he had a very low grade fever. His cries though, were again different than all other cries, and you could feel how much pain he was feeling. You could tell his body was working triple overtime to deal with what was put in him, and, it wasn't making him very happy. So, of course, the loving arms of Mom, Dad, and, ESPECIALLY his Nana were more than happy to work overtime holding him closely and soothing him.We poured so much love onto this little kiddo, and eventually all went to sleep.
So far today, things seem to be ok. I chatted with Amy a bit, and, he seems to be returning to normal. I spoke with him for a few this morning before I left, and, he told me that he won't hold it against us and get a tattoo out of rebellion when he gets older.
